Corona beer forays into sustainable packaging by launching beer pack made using barley

Popular beer brand, Corona is known to have a deep connection with the environment. Moreover, it is said to be the first global brand to leverage technology and processes three years in development by AB InBev’s Global Innovation and Technology Center (GITEC). This revolutionary technology reimagines how to use barley, facilitating the use of essential beer ingredient as a sustainable packaging solution.

Barley seed will still be used to make the beer liked by consumers worldwide. However, barley straw which is a leftover from harvests will be used through a unique pulping process built to handle its relative fragility.

The new paper board is manufactured using 100% recycled wood fibers and barley straw to create new packaging that is as strong and durable as a regular six-pack and also drive sustainability.

With the use of barley straw, 90% less water is used compared to conventional virgin wood process, as well as less energy and fewer harmful chemicals. This game-changing initiative will help in eliminating the need for virgin trees and raw material from Corona Beer’s supply chain in the future.
