Why corrugated boxes and paper packaging must be utilised more in the pandemic hit world?

We all know how the world has been impacted due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many preventive measures such as imposing strict lockdowns have been taken by countries worldwide to prevent the spread of the virus. This has further been a key driver in the increase in e-commerce activity, with consumers opting to get essentials delivered to their doorsteps.

However, there have been concerns about the safety of packaging such as corrugated boxes and carton. Although, the concerns are valid but they are not worthy to be sustained as the risks of transmission from a package is likely very low, according to health experts and agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization.

When compared to other surfaces, the life of coronavirus is only for few hours on paper and 24 hrs on cardboard, according to recent reports. As per the new study from the National Institutes of Health, it was found that the virus could survive up to 3 days on plastic and steel and 1 day on cardboard, whereas it was found that the coronavirus could last up to four days on wood and glass and up to five days on metal, plastic, and ceramic at 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

These time periods also vary depending on conditions such as temperature and humidity along with the porous nature of surfaces like cardboard, carton and paper packaging. Moreover, shipping conditions also make it difficult for coronavirus to survive on the packaging. This can be validated by the Centre of Disease control website, “there is likely very low risk of spread from products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures.”

More safety can be attained by being extra cautious and wiping of the surfaces of shipped packaging with alcohol-based solutions and washing hands after handling the package. An alcohol-based solution can help disinfect packages as well as ease any worry people have about the virus.

The surge in e-commerce activity and shifts towards sustainable packaging is further driving demand of corrugated, carton and paper packaging. Online demand of essentials goods such as fresh food items, pharma products and beverages among others is accelerating the growth of corrugated boxes and folding cartons.

It is important for corrugated box and folding carton industries to capitalise on this current growth. What better platform than exhibitions to be at, to display latest solutions, products and technologies covering an entire range of corrugated as well as folding carton packaging. IndiaCorr Expo 2020 will be a right place for companies to showcase latest technologies, products and solutions under dedicated pavilions along with numerous networking opportunities.
