Biodegradable pharmaceutical packaging to gain traction in the coming times

Pharmaceutical packaging materials are used to protect physical and biological protection during storage, transportation, and distribution of pharmaceuticals. Biodegradable packaging materials are eco-friendly materials, usually made of paper, plastic, cardboard (recycled), corn starch gelatin, pectin, wheat bran, and others. Selection of the packaging materials depends upon the type of pharmaceutical products, which require protection against various environmental, mechanical, and biological factors.

Pharma packaging is divided into primary packaging, secondary packaging, and tertiary packaging. Primary packaging has direct contact with the product as it is the first layer of packaging. Secondary and tertiary packaging provide external protection to the product, ensuring their safe distribution and logistics.

Packaging plays a significant role in the pharmaceuticals industry. As the consumption of medicines has consistently been increasing, with the rising incidence of chronic diseases, and this leads to the accumulation of non-biodegradable packaging waste. In order to tackle the waste issue, it is essential to use biodegradable packaging materials, which are eco-friendly. This is propelling demand of biodegradable packaging materials globally and is further expected to drive the global biodegradable pharmaceutical packaging market growth.
