Top 3 trends in Food Packaging

With growing concern for sustainability and clean label products, also with changing technological developments, the packaging industry has seen a lot of changes. From processing end, these are three important trends which are playing a direct role in packaging developments.

  1. 1. Sustainability

Sustainability has become one of the important factor in food and beverage packaging now a days.  It is no longer a nice-to-have. It has become a must-have for any brands looking to future-proof their operations against the rising tide of consumer scrutiny.

With the current scenario, consumers prefer their food to be consciously sourced and ethically produced. Food companies are focusing their role in facilitating a farm-to-table experience. Packaging sustainability has now become most important concern for consumers who prefer materials from recycled goods that are also recyclable. Packaging is moving toward novel substrates to avoid plastic and decrease degradation times. Many of the leading brands have already started adopting the sustainable packaging. To mention a few -  Unilever-Magnum has launched new tubs made with recycled plastic. E-commerce giant Amazon India recently announced that it has completely eliminated the use of single-use plastic in packaging across its 50-plus fulfilment centres. Flipkart also announced it would eliminate single use plastic in packaging and deliver in paper-based packaging instead of poly bags

  2. 2. Traceability

Traceability is the ability to track any food through all stages of production, processing and distribution including importation and at retail. Increasing perception of threats to food integrity is driving the need for food safety measures. Traceability in the food supply chain can do more than safeguard against potential disasters, particularly at the processing stage. In the supply chain, sorting machines are important for ensuring traceability, food quality, and food safety, it can also help reduce food waste, analyse yield, and optimise operating efficiencies. Moreover, sorting technologies can help food producers and processors win business by ensuring that their products attain a quality standard appealing to retailers. Companies are now investing more and more in smart technology, like QR codes and specialty packaging designed to connect with the consumer.

  3. 3. Neat and clean labels

Labelling is one way in which consumers can get knowledge about the food they consider buying. Labelling also enhances the appearance for promoting the product. Consumers are interested in foods with recognizable ingredients. Food processors are reformulating recipes to include natural, healthier ingredients in all food categories. Packages and labels communicate how to use, transport, recycle or dispose of the package or product. To meet  clean labelling  demands, packaging must offer clear product images and easily readable and identifiable labelling filled with information about package size and nutritional content. A neat and clean label helps not only attract the customer but also brings them one step closer in buying decision. Due to changing consumer behavioural pattern and for food safety, the food packaging companies are now paying more attention on the labels too.

For food packaging companies, it is always important to source the right kind of packaging machines, packaging and labelling materials, technology. At times it becomes difficult to source them all at one place. Some of the leading exhibitions like PackPlus hosts end-to-end packaging machinery and solutions for almost every industry. If you are looking to source any solutions or machines, PackPlus will be the right place for you visit. PackPlus is scheduled on 17-18-19 Dec 2020 at India Expo Mart, Greater Noida, Delhi – NCR
