Goa Startup launches biodegradable packaging that stores liquid for 2 days

Imagine getting your favourite curry or daal from a restaurant packed in paper bag. This amazing feat has been achieved by a Goa-based start-up, LaFabrica Craft. The start-up has introduced a packaging solution that allows liquid food items to be carried in a biodegradable packaging solution.

Generally, food is delivered in plastic packaging or aluminium containers from most of the restaurants and with online food delivery becoming more prevalent, it is pertinent that alternate solutions like paper are being widely adopted to reduce wastage. Normally, these containers mostly end up in the landfill and or pile up in our homes.

The start-up was co-founded by Sachin Gangadharan in 2019 an architect who quit his job. The company intends to solve the persisting problem of non-biodegradable packaging by aiming to replace all of this plastic packaging with environmentally friendly solutions. In addition to that, the company has also worked out solutions for carrying heavy items in biodegradable paper bags.

The biodegradable packaging is made with recycled paper pulp or enzymes drawn from cotton, wheat husk or other organic material. The paper is made mostly from carbon-neutral practices. The paper is shaped into a pouch by self-help groups and locals. To prevent leaks, the paper is layered with Poly Lactic Acid (PLA), which is a polymer mainly derived from corn or tapioca starch. This method is prevalent in the market, however, their patented material, combined with the protective layer, helps achieve the outcome.
