National Institute of Ocean Technology introduces biodegradable plastic using marine seaweed
According to news reports, National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) has introduced a bio-plastic film using marine seaweed and PEG-3000. With plastic wastage and pollution being a major issue, this new product will be a game-changer in the plastic industry and will play a significant role in limiting usage of non-biodegradable plastics.
Bio-plastic films safely breakdown in the environment without leaving any toxicity, but their physical and mechanical properties meet the properties of conventional plastics.
As it is known, traditional plastics are threat to the natural environment such as oceans, they interact with water resulting in the formation of hazardous chemicals that ultimately leach into the environment. In addition, conventional plastic take hundreds of years to break down.
In a move to find sustainable alternatives, scientists have now focused their research to find marine biomass as an option to producing biodegradable plastics more sustainably so that biomass used for feedstocks are not disturbed.
